THE GALAXIES

        GALAXIES
Look up at the sky on a clear night . Do you see several tiny speck of light dotting space?
These come from stars, GALAXIES and hundreds of other objects . A galaxy  is a cluster  of stars, gas and dust , held together  by a force called gravity . At first astronomers knew of only 9ne galaxy. Later, they discovered  that the universe contains over 100 billion galaxies.

Milky way,the galaxy we live in contains between 100 to 400 billion stars.

Spiral galaxies are made up of a large number  of blue young  stars

GALAXIES GALORE

There are many different  types of galaxies scattered across shape. Some galaxies are small, single clusters. Other belong to a large family of galaxies,  or a supercluster. One example  of a GALAXY cluster  is the Vigro Cluster, which is made up of more than 2000 galaxies.
The coma Cluster contains about 3000 galaxies.

  SHAPES IN THE SKY

Galaxies also come in a variety of shapes and sizes A single galaxy  can be made up of as many as three billion stars 🌟! Smaller galaxies are made up of fewer stars. About a hundred years ago astronomers  Edwin  Hubble divided galaxies into groups according to their shapes.  There are four main galaxy shapes :- spiral, barred spiral, irregular and elliptical. A spiral galaxy has long and curved arms, and looks like a giant whirlpool. Barred spiral galaxy is so named for the bar of stars that run across its centern. Elliptical galaxies  are ovalor round , while irregular  galaxies  have no particular  shape.

Barred spiral galaxies  are also called SB ( Spiral barred ) as classified  by Edwin Hubble.

30 per cent of all the galaxies  known are elliptical  galaxies.

 FACT ABOUT THE  GALAXIES

THE MILKY WAY  WAY IS SO ENORMOUS  THAT THE SUN WOULD TAKE OVER 200 MILLION YEARS TO GO GROUND IT  ONCE.

Now we learn about our galaxy

The milky way

The milky way galaxy we live in. It is also home to the sun and to than 200 billion stars. This spiral galaxy formed about 14 billion  years ago , looks like faints streak of milk across the night sky. The milky way belongs to the larger cluster of galaxies  known as the Local Group. It is the second largest galaxy in this cluster. The local Group contains about 30 galaxies,  including the Andromeda Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. These two galaxies   are the closest neighbors of our milky way .
